OTW's GeoCities Rescue Project
Jul. 25th, 2009 03:20 pmGeoCities will be closing its websites in October: all websites on GeoCities will then disappear. Some of these sites may be retrievable through the Wayback Machine on Internet Archive, but not all.
The Organization for Transformative Works has announced its GeoCities Rescue Project to preserve individual and group archives and fan sites. Beta accounts are being offered for GeoCities archives on the Archive of Our Own. Information and records of fan sites may be preserved on Fanlore. Information on contacting Open Doors to preserve archives and other sites and how to help is given on the Rescue Project link above. Volunteers are available to help you set up a Fanlore entries for fannish resource sites.
A while ago, I posted a list of Highlander sites on GeoCities; it's not a comprehensive list, but includes all the sites still active that I could cull from previously posted lists of Highlander sites.

francescacoppa for Open Doors says:
"If you or folks in the HL community would help us get in touch with the authors (or tell the authors to contact us!), that would be great: we can't unfortunately archive actual STORIES without an author, site admin, or archivist's permission. We can, however, screenshot and document sites broadly in Fanlore, including the general resource sites. We'll be working on that, but if anyone wants to help work on this HL list particularly, please comment or write to Open Doors!"
If you're interested in helping to preserve stories or the history of the Highlander fandom, please look at the suggestions here. Also, please spread the word. I'll cross-post this to a couple of other communities, but feel free to link or repost anywhere you think it would be of interest. I no longer belong to any Highlander mailing lists. If you do, could you spread the word there, as well?
Thanks!
